Veteran auctioneer Lew Lipset has put together an eclectic lineup of vintage cards and memorabilia for his Nov. 3 auction, a roster that includes the earliest known cards portraying members of a team, the late 1960s Troy Haymakers.
“This is the largest auction we’ve had in years,” said Lipset, who added that he expected the sale to be his largest-grossing effort as well.
As is customary in Lipset’s auctions, there is a wide diversity across all five major sports, as well as a vast array of vintage non-sport material.
Baseball highlights include an 1888 pictorial album, and 1895 Cleveland composite print with Cy Young and an 1891 Boston team composite, autographed George Burke photographs, The rare Semon & Brush Ty Cobb PC’s (shown at right) more than 50 lots from the John Spalding Photo Collection (shown far right), and a extraodinary single lot of more than 200 pieces of baseball sheet music.
The sale also features T202 Hassan Triple Folder, T205 Gold Border and T206 White Border sets (shown lower right), T227s, a W514 set, R305 Tattoo Orbits (at right), an R316 Kashin set and a 1939 Play Ball set, plus postwar toughies like a high-grade 1948 Bowman set, and a 1949 Bowman (complete set with many variations).
The roster from other sports includes an R331 National Chicle Football set, an entirely graded 1961 Fleer Basketball set, 1948 Bowman and 1957 Topps basketball sets, plus Parkhurst and 1950s Topps hockey cards, a 1949 Champion Exhibit near set and a 1948 Bowman Football complete set.
A sampling of the highlights of the 400-plus lots appears in a full-color advertisement on page 35 of the Oct. 27 SCD. The complete auction listings appear on the www.oldjudge.com website; for more information call (480) 488-9889.
