The bat used by Houston pinch-hitter Orlando Palmeiro for the final out of the 2005 World Series has sold at auction for $18,400 (including buyer’s premium).
Geppi’s Memorabilia Road Show obtained the bat from Palmeiro, who is donating the proceeds to charities supported by he and his wife.
Palmeiro grounded out, Juan Uribe to Paul Konerko, short to first, to clinch the Chicago White Sox first world championship in 88 years.  The Sox won the game 1-0 for a four game sweep of the Astros, who were playing in their first World Series ever.
The Louisville Slugger bat is signed and inscribed by Palmeiro and still retains sticky pine tar on the handle.
“We can’t say whether the price was above or below expectations because this was very much untested waters,” noted Steve Geppi, President of Geppi’s Memorabilia Road Show.  “There had never been, to our knowledge, an item associated with the ‘last out’ of a World Series put up for auction before and the market for White Sox World Series memorabilia is an untested one.  So it’s really an item that found the market value on its own rather than meeting anyone’s expectations.”
The winning bidder is identified at this time only as being from the city of Chicago.
Palmeiro, an 11-year veteran who broke in with the Angels after playing college ball at the University of Miami, hit .284 for the Astros last season, and was pinch-hitting for Brad Lidge in game four, facing Chicago closer Bobby Jenks.  Palmeiro is a native of Hoboken, N.J., a city which makes claim to being the site of the first organized games of baseball in the 1840s.  He is one of ten players in major league history born in Hoboken, with another being the Yankees’ Johnny Kucks, winning pitcher of the seventh game of the 1956 World Series.
Geppi’s Memorabilia Road Show is unique in obtaining all consignments directly from sports insiders, notably players, their families or their representatives, or those who worked in the industry.
