Game-used jerseys from Gale Sayers, Walter Payton, Jerry Rice, Dan Marino and Tom Brady were some of the feature items in Vintage Authentics recent auction. The nearly 600-lot auction closed on July 13.
The biggest item was the Sayers road jersey, which was a circa-1967-68 game-used and autographed. It sold for $27,660. The Payton road jersey was a late 1970s game-used rookie era and went for $9,546, while the Brady (2001 road jersey) sold for $5,727, Marino (1997 road jersey) sold for $3,626 and the Rice (1985 road rookie jersey) sold for $2,840.
Other notable game-used jerseys include: 1994 Alex Rodriguez rookie jersey ($5,946); 2003-04 LeBron James rookie jersey ($5,813); 2005-06 Dwyane Wade jersey ($5,268); 1989 Michael Jordan game-used shorts ($3,626); 1973 Willie Mays game-used and autographed jersey ($3,151); 2004 Joe Mauer rookie jersey ($3,041); late 1970s/early 1980s Ted Hendricks jersey ($3,011); 2004 Ben Roethlisberger rookie jersey ($2,724); 1994 Marino game-used and autographed preseason jersey ($2,585); 1996 Jordan all-star jersey ($2,585); circa 1986-87 Larry Bird jersey ($2,500); 2001 Ichiro rookie jersey ($2,499); 1993 Jerome Bettis game-used and autographed rookie jersey ($2,291); 1989 Jordan game-used warm-up jacket and pants ($2,271); 2004 Eli Manning game-used and autographed rookie jersey ($2,261); 1997 Bettis jersey ($2,232); 2002 Brett Favre game-used and autographed jersey ($2,217); and a 1989 Kirby Puckett jersey ($2,031).
Three high-profile, game-used bats were also offered. First, a 1917-21 Honus Wagner H&B game-used and sidewritten “Honus Wagner Model 6-21-23” bat sold for $15,240. The bat, graded A10 by MEARS, had a blank barrel and was from the time period when Wagner was making the transition from player to coach. Next, a 1921-31 Babe Ruth H&B sold for $15,112. The bat was graded A5 by MEARS. Finally, a 2000 Barry Bonds game-used multi home run bat graded A9 sold for $11,261.
Other game-used bats of note include: 1943-49 Jimmie Foxx H&B graded A6.5 ($5,752); a 1922-25 Wagner post-career bat ($9,306); 2001 Ichiro Louisville Slugger game-used rookie bat ($3,125); 1965-68 Frank Robinson H&B ($2,869); 1955-57 Ted Williams H&B ($2,773); 1946-47 Johnny Mize H&B ($2,714); 1981 Mike Schmidt game-used and autographed Adirondack ($2,305); 1980-883 Eddie Murray Louisville Slugger ($2,177); 1921-31 George Sisler H&B ($1,939); and 1969-72 Pete Rose H&B ($1,888).
Autographs and graded cards rounded out the offering, with a 1941 Joe DiMaggio Play Ball GAI 8 selling for $10,986. Key autographed pieces include: 1923 New York Yankees signed baseball with Ruth and Grover Cleveland Alexander ($4,603); Lou Gehrig signed original Wheaties box cutout ($3,817); Mantle and DiMaggio signed baseball ($3,350); Mantle signed “Willie Mays sucks!” baseball ($2,681); Ruth signed baseball ($2,399); 1931 Tour of Japan team-signed baseball with Gehrig ($2,196); lot of 12 Ted Williams signed, PSA-graded baseballs ($2,603); lot of eight Bonds signed jerseys ($4,301) and a Roy Campanella and Jackie Robinson signed baseball ($2,279).
Graded card highlights included: 1948 Leaf Robinson GAI 8 ($7,960); 1949 Bowman Duke Snider GA 9.5 ($7,755); 1948 Bowman Yogi Berra GAI 9 ($3,525); 1939 Play Ball DiMaggio GAI 8 ($2,795); . In addition, two sets generated some large numbers: 1953 Topps Baseball partial set of 256 of 274 cards sold for $8,180) and a complete 1958 Topps Baseball set sold for $4,524).
