National Convention Announces Locations Through 2019

Per Beckett Media, the National Sports Collectors Convention has announced the locations of the show through 2019. They are as follows:

2014: Cleveland
2015: Chicago
2016: Atlantic City
2017: Chicago
2018: Cleveland
2019: Chicago.

This year, the show will be held in Chicago. Many have asked how these decisions are made. Cities must have ample hotel rooms, be willing to set aside those rooms years in advance, have a convention center and be affordable. The National committee offers a selection of cities, and ultimately, dealers (exhibitors at the show) vote on the host city.

Chicago and Cleveland often win out for being somewhat centrally located, meeting the requirements noted above (including a major airport) and past success at those locations.

That said, who’s looking forward to Atlantic City? Which city would you like to see the show held?

As a West Coaster, that means I won’t be at any. Too bad. I tried to make Chicago work this year — I’ve got some serious bucks to spend — but it was just too inconvenient and complicated.

Historically, the majority of dealers (exhibitors) live east of the Mississippi River. When location votes are held, the easterners always win by majority. They can care less that we in the west have to drive far, as long as they don’t have to. I wish it was this simple, but it is not. There are convention facilities that make demands on the show promoters to book for consecutive years, and others that just price themselves out of contention.
When I hear that a collector, with discretionary dollars to spend, is turned off because the show is too far away. THAT makes me mad. How many other potential customers are turned off by this issue?

I’d love to see The National come to Detroit’s COBO CENTER! It was just expanded and renovated! Huge collectors market here in the Midwest! Lots of hotel rooms and 3 casinos downtown and close enough to Metro Airport too!
