Settlement Reached in Topps, UD Licensing Dispute

Topps and licensing agency CMG Worldwide have reached an informal settlement with Upper Deck in a trademark infringement suit filed in June.

The suit alleged Upper Deck wrongfully used images and names of select players in its 2008 MLB SP Legendary Cuts product whose rights were licensed by CMG to Topps. Details of the settlement were not outlined in court documents. The documents state the companies expect to have a formal settlement completed by sometime in mid-January.

In April, Topps and CMG announced a licensing agreement whereby Topps would have exclusive rights to names and images of legendary ballplayers such as Lou Gehrig, Jackie Robinson, Roy Campanella, Cy Young, Christy Mathewson and others.
