McKie has reported three new variations to the set, and a theory about the creation of the rarest of the Salada variations.
Newly cataloged are variations of coins No. 9 Jim Lemon, No. 36 Harmon Killebrew and No. 46a Ryne Duren (Red Shirt Buttons).

Strasburg steals the show at this year's National

Gray was one of the first 100 lucky attendees to obtain the limited edition Topps Heritage Stephen Strasburg rookie card that the trading-card giant was giving out. In exchange for 10 wrappers of any Topps product, a convention-goer could receive a card of which only 999 were made. All but one were to be distributed at the convention over the course of the five-day event this past week. A New Jersey collectibles dealer has sent for verification of four “oversize” 19th-century baseball cabinet cards. He thought the hobby should be aware of what he believes are two new poses of Old Judge cabinets. Each of the cards measures about 67/8-by-91/8 inches (give or take a 1/16 of an inch), on rather generic gray cardboard backing consistent with many cabinets of the era.

For those of you who still haven’t seen either the HBO “Real Sports” or ESPN “Outside the Lines” episodes that each featured a story about the same Honus Wagner T206 card owned by trucker and former R&B keyboardist John Cobb, you either live under a rock or are able to avoid this type of absurd sensationalistic journalism, which is almost equally as silly as reality television or “Deal or No Deal.”

In short, Cobb purchased the card from an estate sale in 1984, and despite the majority of hobby experts he’s turned to for help who have advised him that his card is fake, Cobb still insists in trying to prove that it’s real, and during his research, he has brought along HBO and ESPN for the fantasy ride.

Bad news continues for Bears Urlacher

Within days of a season-ending wrist injury, Chicago Bears linebacker Brian Urlacher says he was written off by an autograph and sports memorabilia company. Now Urlacher, injured Sept. 13 in a game against the Green Bay Packers, is suing Dreams, Inc. for terminating a four-year, $1.2 million contract that had him traveling the country, earning money for special appearances and signing autographs and sports memorabilia.

Dallas Cowboys QB Tony Romo is the latest high-profile athlete to join Upper Deck’s stable of spokesmen, inking an exclusive deal with UD for autographed memorabilia. Terms of the arrangement were not disclosed, but the exclusivity as far as autographs is concerned is limited to memorabilia items. Romo will also sign cards for the company, but his signed cards are not exclusive to UD.

When I wrote Operation Bullpen: The Inside Story of the Biggest Forgery Scam in American History, I figured it would be like many of my other books. I’d get some nice reviews in the media, do some radio and newspaper interviews about it and conduct the usual author talks at bookstores and community groups. End of story.
Boy, was I wrong.
Operation Bullpen – the book and the case – are still going strong, generating buzz in chat groups on the Internet. I know this because a member of one of these groups called me the other day to talk about the book and some of the issues and personalities in it. This was around the same time that two other collectors sent me e-mails asking me what to do about dealers they suspected of selling forgeries. Then there was the call I got one morning from Thomas Riccio, one of the guys involved in the latest O.J. Simpson mess. He also had some questions and comments about Operation Bullpen, and so we chatted while I was sitting in my pajamas in my living room at home.

Despite an offseason that featured a significant amount of negative media publicity, sales of MLB-licensed products for this season – including trading cards – are “incredibly positive,” according to Colin Hagen, VP of hard goods for MLB Properties.

In an interview airing this week on Sports Collecting Radio, Hagen said the first four months of the 2008 baseball card season have been good in terms of sales. He said a new release date for Upper Deck’s first series helped the brand “outperform all of our expectations” and that sales of the other 2008 releases to date have been equally strong.

MLB settles infringement lawsuit with Upper Deck

The lawsuit that pitted MLB against trading card maker Upper Deck was settled March 3 prior to its scheduled April court date. The suit, in which Major League Baseball Properties alleged Upper Deck had broken trademark infringement laws concerning three unlicensed baseball card products released early this year. The suit ends with UD being allowed to continue sales of the three Upper Deck baseball card products, 2009 Signatures Stars, 2009 Ultimate Collection and 2010 Series 1 Baseball, but will be prohibited from producing any other brands moving forward.

Graded card collectors were left with a lot to chew on Wednesday when it was announced that Professional Sports Authenticator (PSA), the hobby’s largest card-grading company, was changing its grading scale to include half grades.

In a move that would, either intentionally or coincidentally, bring them in line with grading competitors Beckett, SGC and GAI — who also offer half grades — PSA officials decided the time was right to expand their grading scale. The move, in effect, adds eight grades to the existing 1-to-10 scale. There will be no 9.5 grade added.

A T206 Honus Wagner card, once owned by noted collector Barry Halper, then purchased by actor Charlie Sheen and later the subject of a high-profile robbery, will be offered by Robert Edward Auctions in a sale next April.

In the 1990s, this T206 Wagner was displayed at the All Star Café in Times Square in New York City as part of The Charlie Sheen Collection. After having been involved in cataloging baseball cards for nearly 30 years, I’m surprised that this got by me. Recently on the postwar section of the Net54 forums, Connecticut collector Mark Rios posted a picture of a 1957 Topps paper proof card. While blank-back paper proofs are not unheard of from the 1960s and 1970s, I’d never before seen a fully printed (front and back) paper proof for any Topps issue, much less one of my favorite sets of all time, the 1957.

According to a newspaper report, Arizona Diamondbacks managing general partner E.G. "Ken" Kendrick, is the current owner of the Holy Grail of baseball cards — the coveted 1909 T206 Honus Wagner once owned by Wayne Gretzky.

The card sold for a record $2.8 million in a private sale in September 2007 to a bidder than insisted on remaining anonymous. A year later, the owner’s name is being reported in the media for the first time.

Bob Koehler, owner of Bob Koehler Cards and co-author of The American Association Milwaukee Brewers, died April 26 in Brookfield, Wis. He was 67.

Koehler, a long-time participant of the National Sports Collector and SABR conventions, was a well-known baseball historian and a member of the Old Time Ball Players Association and the Milwaukee Braves Historical Society. He was at every National Convention except the first one, and last year, when he was ill, and he still had a table there in Cleveland. For many years he was also a frequent advertiser in the pages of Sports Collectors Digest.

Andreas Lilja, a defensemen in his third season playing for the Wings, sixth NHL season overall, made an autograph appearance at the Gibraltar Trade Center on Jan. 13. He did well, but not like a Wings player would have done in years past.

The three-day show, held Jan. 11-13, also featured Baseball Hall of Famer Rod Carew and former Tiger pitchers Doug Bair and John Hiller.

“The show went very well,” said Gibraltar’s Mark Dehem. “I thought Lilja would draw better. But it seems like there’s more interest in the Tigers right now than the Red Wings.”

Sales decline at hobby shops

More than 47 percent of hobby shops responding to Card Trade magazine’s annual retailer survey reported a decrease in sales for 2007, and those stores that did see a drop in sales saw a rather significant decline. Of the retailers who reported a decrease, the average decline was 20 percent.

The reasons for the declines include a drop in overall store traffic for 57 percent of stores (only 16.6 percent reported an increase) and a slowdown in sales for current-year cards. The average retailer sold $131,700 worth of current-year cards in 2007, down from an average of $141,339 in 2006.

A highly anticipated Super Bowl matchup in a market that was hosting its first Super Bowl in 12 years combined to trigger a record turnout for the NFL Experience and Topps Super Bowl Card Show in Glendale, Ariz.
League officials said the six-day event attracted more than 200,000, easily surpassing the old record of 175,000.

“It was one of the best, if not the best, NFL Experience events,” said Pete Quaglierini, manager of the collectibles show for the NFL. “We had 35,000 attend for the opening weekend, which was a great number. We had 10,000 people come through in the first hour on the next Friday. That kind of traffic you don’t usually see until Saturday afternoon.”

Lionel Carter remembered as a hobby legend

Lionel Carter, a hobby pioneer and one of the legendary collectors in the history of the hobby, died last Thursday at the age of 90. Carter had been in and out of a nursing home for the past several months with long-standing breathing and circulation problems.

Carter’s legacy as a collector dates back to the 1930s, when he started collecting by buying Goudey packs as a teenager during the Depression. He subsequently amassed one of the most extraordinary accumulations of vintage cards, assembling complete sets from as far back as the turn of the century.

One of the longest legal battles in the sports card industry isn’t officially over, but it took a big step toward conclusion this week when a judge declared a patent for memorabilia-based trading cards to be invalid. The decision came in a lawsuit that charged Upper Deck and Donruss with infringing the patent.

The patent holder, Adrian Gluck of California-based Media Technologies, has already announced plans to appeal the decision. The judge dismissed the patent infringement claim less than a month before the case was scheduled to go to a jury trial in which a significant financial judgment was sought by Media Technologies.

Why not just make it a cool $2 million? Scott Smith admits it's a marketing tactic to draw attention to his other online sports memorabilia auctions, but he'd still be willing to sell his entire collection of over 10,000 signed Sports Illustrated copies today for the seven-figure price. His signed collection on its own represents 94 percent of the magazine's history. Mostly, Smith admits, he's trying to drum up publicity for individual edition sales for collectors and fans as the holiday season approaches.

In what fi gures to be one of the biggest vintage cardofferings of the year, a Baltimore family will be auctioning off 17 of the super-rare cards, all of which have been graded, on eBay in the next three months. I said “sure” without even knowing anything about the museum. I thought in the back of my mind I would have to shorten the visit a bit in order to keep my wife’s interest since her enthusiasm for all things sports-related has its limits. In November 1931, a team of major league All-Stars organized by Herb Hunter and Fred Lieb travelled to Japan for a 17-game goodwill tour. The squad was impressive; seven of the 14 players would make the Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, while another would be inducted into the Japanese hall. The roster included Lou Gehrig, Frank Frisch, Rabbit Maranville, Mickey Cochrane, Al Simmons, Lefty Grove, George Kelly and Frank “Lefty” O’Doul.
