Hobby promotion kicks off UD’s 20th anniversary events

It’s been 20 years since Upper Deck announced it was entering the trading card market, and the company is about to begin celebrating that anniversary. This month marks the debut of a hobby shop promotion that features a special 80-card set, a wrapper redemption offer with the chance to obtain high-dollar buyback cards from previous releases and a sweepstakes prize that every sports fan would love to win.

The special 20th Anniversary set consists of 80 cards featuring athletes from professional baseball, football, basketball and hockey that have helped shape the company’s success over the last 20 years. Collectors can only receive the special cards through hobby stores that are part of Upper Deck’s Certified Diamond Dealers network. Eight new cards will be released every month through December. Collectors need to purchase packs of new Upper Deck and Fleer releases from these stores to receive individual cards from the set.

Collectors who purchase unopened boxes at the stores will receive a sealed threecard pack of the 20th Anniversary cards with their purchase. The packs also contain randomly inserted buy-back cards that feature a variety of the company’s top cards issued over the past 19 years, including its 1988 baseball promo cards and the Michael Jordan autographed Fleer rookie buy-back card released last year.

Collectors who complete the set by entering in the numeric codes from the back of all 80 cards at www.upperdeck.com/anniversary by Dec. 31 are eligible to win a fan’s dream package: tickets, airfare and accommodations for the winner and a guest to Super Bowl XLIII; and one game each of the 2009 NBA Finals, Stanley Cup Finals and World Series.

“Our goal has always been to drive consumers to our Certified Diamond Dealer partners,” said Mike Phillips, Upper Deck’s director of Hobby Sales. “We are offering collectors an incredible set, fantastic buy-back cards celebrating Upper Deck’s rich history and one of the most amazing prizes ever, all for doing what they already do – collecting our products.”
